- You don’t have to change unless you want to. The servers can use your existing phone lines from your local phone service provider.
- Yes. You don’t need local phone service to use our servers. There are plenty of companies available such as Broadvoice, FreeDialup, and IAXTel. However you should know that most Voice-over-IP companies do not provide 911 service. We recommend that you have at least one phone line from a local phone service company for 911 service.
- Setting up a server is complicated. You need a good working knowledge of Linux and software. Most people are not able to configure their own because they are not familiar with the Linux operating system or the PBX software. Our package price includes the hardware and a modest labor fee.
- Yes. You have two options with Vontage. First, you can connect an Asterisk server through regular phones lines (RJ11) to the Vontage ATA Device. This may be a problem for faxing, but should work for voice. Second, you can purchase a softphone addition to your Vontage phone service. At the time of this writing (5/7/05) the softphone is an additional $10.00 per month with 500 Minutes. It is 3.9 cents per additional minute over the 500.
- The maximum number of extensions you can have is limited by the speed of the hardware. You will need to increase the speed of the processor and the amount of ram as the number of extensions go up. You should be able to comfortably run 10-15 extensions with our base package.
- You can add up to 255 analog phone lines (through POTS ports) from your local phone service. The number of available lines through a Voice-over-IP provided will depend mainly on the speed of your Internet Connection.
- You should check with legal counsel before attempting any line recording. You can review this web site for more information. This is not legal advice and is provided as additional information only.
- We recommend Teliax for your voice over IP provider. Teliax’s services are the most cost effective that we have found. Their services intergrate easier into Asterisk. You can get more details of their avaialble plans and sign up here.
